Upcycling

Rationale

As this project was about upcycling, the material I used was very important to me as I wanted to help turn waste into a beautiful product. With this in mind I was prompted to go with using E-waste, cable wire in particular as e-waste is such a big problem as there are so many products being discarded due to the fact that replacing is much more efficient and cheaper to repair the item which is also known as design obsolete.
With these considerations I was inclined to use the insulated wires you find when you strip down telephone or network cables. The insulating wires found in the cables have very bright contrasting colours which I wanted to use in my advantage.
My product “Spirals” is a small decorative bowl used to hold small objects such as keys, lollies and etc.  Spirals incorporates the different coloured wires to make a visually attracting bowl that anybody would want to put in their home, its inviting, attractive and appealing.

  1. it is a very well done work Andrew. I like your weaving and also the variation in colours . Thats so neat and attractive.
Overal , i see the model is very good...however, i think you need to work a bit more with your rationale,,, eg how can you come up with this shape? what does the shape mean to you and users...?
anyway , it is goodddddddd, good job .good luck Andrew.

  2. I love it! what a brilliant idea, very different from traditional weaving, you used the colours very well to creat a very vibrant object out of e-waste, i would definitely like to own something like this. i do understand weaving always takes longer than u expected (i've still got a scarf to finish off from a few years ago ><) and requires alot of effort, give ur hands cramps and stuff, but i'd think if it was taller it might be more functional, cos a shallow dish can't hold much, and because the brilliant colours, your keys might just disappear in the bowl, and cause unnecessary alarm! :D

  3. i really like the way you weave your basket. it is very different and unique. it doesnt looks like it made out of end-of-life materials. it is looks like a ready-to-sell product instead. very nice work.

  4. I didn't know that this made out of cables! I like it, it doesn't look like you made it out of waste at all. I like the colors and the spiral shape, maybe if you make it bigger it would be really great. but so far i like it, great job!

  6. Just be looking at this i can tell how much time and "crafting" would have gone into this. It was a solution that really celebrated the material and its wide variety of colours. well done
